Coenzyme Q10, also known as ubiquinone, is a critical component of the mitochondria and the production of ATP. Coenzyme Q10 is found in high concentration in human heart and liver tissue. This critical role may be useful in enhancing athletic performance.
Studies indicate that endurance capacity can be increased up to 28% with supplemental Coenzyme Q10 (Folkers 1981). In another study (Snider 1992), athletes using Coenzyme Q10 performed 3.7% better than when the same athletes took a placebo. This test had athletes perform a 90 minute run, then cycle to exhustion. When taking Coenzyme Q10, these athletes were able to prolong exercise an additional eight minutes (avg. 3 hours, 43 minutes vs. 3 hours, 35 minutes).
Supplemental Coenzyme Q10 has been shown to have other health benefits. Research has shown Coenzyme Q10 beneficial in the treatment and prevention of periodontal disease, cardiovascular desease, congestive heart failure, high blood pressure, cancer, immune deficiency and other disorders. Tests with mice have shown Coenzyme Q10 to partially restore age related decline in immune response and increase average survival rates.
Coenzyme Q10 has antioxidant properties which protect against lipid peroxidation. Lipid peroxidation may be a significant factor in artherosclerosis.
Coenzyme Q10 is a vegetarian pharmaceutical grade product of Japan derived from biological fermentation and contains no common allergen.
Recommended dosage varies from 30 mg. daily for sedentary individuals to over 450 mg. for endurance athletes. Dr. Bill Misner in "Nutrition For Endurance" suggests "150 mg. each hour for three hours prior to a competitive event, then take 150 mg. per hour of competitve exercise. In training, load 150 mg. one hour before exercise, and repeat the same dose every other hour during the training session."
