Creatine Monohydrate Quality Assurance

Creatine Monohydrate Products

There can be a huge variation in the quality of creatine monohydrate products in the natural products industry (see the May 1998 issue of MuscleMag International). Some companies are purchasing creatine monohydrate from sources that contain several unwanted impurities and byproducts. In our opinion, the quality of these products is so poor that it poses a potential health risk to consumers.

Dihydrotriazine is a byproduct of creatine monohydrate production. Its safety and toxicity have not been well studied and remain largely unknown. Based on the chemical structure, some chemists believe the compound may be harmful in large doses. Since consumers often take up to 50 grams of creatine a day, even a small percentage of dihydrotriazine in the product could add up to a biologically significant amount. Tests revealed that some creatine products contain 0.3% - 0.4% dihydrotriazine, or up to 200 milligrams. This high level is unacceptable for a compound whose biological effects are not known. Our creatine monohydrate powder has no detectable amount of dihydrotriazine.

Dicyandiamide is a creatine byproduct that seems safe for human consumption but, in larger amounts causes creatine to have a bitter taste. In order to prevent the bitterness, dicyandiamide levels should be below 20 Parts Per Million (PPM). The testing of two creatine monohydrate products revealed dicyandiamide levels of 18,000 parts per million (ppm) and 2,300 ppm. These are extraordinarily high levels. In contrast, our creatine monohydrate product is manufactured to less than 20 ppm.

We rigorously select the world's best raw materials. Our creatine monohydrate is manufactured with strict quality control standards by one of the world's most respected producers, SKW of Germany (CreaPure). It contains virtually no unwanted impurities or byproducts.
